BethHello and welcome to Question and Answer of the Week. I'm Beth. JiayingAnd I'm Jiaying. This week, we're answering this question: Question我想知道在朗读英语时,关于爆破、失去爆破以及何时连读是如何区分的,以及什么情况该作此朗读。 BethLike an explosion, the plosives are /t/, /p/, /k/, /d/, /b/ and /g/. BethThat's right. Assimilation is when a sound changes depending on the sounds around it. BethLike in 'credit card'. /kredɪt kɑːd/ becomes /kredɪ(k) kɑːd/. Note that it's /kredɪ(k) kɑːd/, not /kredɪk kɑːd/. ExamplesIs that cake dairy free?(那个蛋糕是不含乳制品的吗?) Do you know a short cut to the station?(请问去车站有没有近路?) Beth'That cake /ðæt keɪk/' becomes /ðæ(k) keɪk/ and 'short cut /ʃɔːt kʌt/' becomes /ʃɔː(k) kʌt/. BethLike in 'speed boat'. The /d/ changes to a /b/ and then merges with the /b/ from the following word. Again, these two words sound like one word. 'Speed boat' becomes 'speebboat'. Listen to some other examples. ExamplesYour dog is lovely. What a good boy!(你的狗真可爱。 Did you find bigger trousers?(你找到大一码的裤子了吗?) Jiaying在第一个例句中,“good boy /ɡʊd bɔɪ/” 读作 /gʊ(b) bɔɪ/;在第二个例句中, “find bigger /faɪnd bɪgə/” 读作 /faɪn(b) bɪgə/。 BethAlso in everyday speech, the plosive /d/ changes to the plosive /g/ when it comes before a /g/ or a /k/. So, 'bad girl' becomes 'baggirl' and 'good cook' becomes 'googcook'. BethSo 'a white piece /waɪt pɪːs/of paper' becomes 'a /waɪ(p) pɪːs/ of paper'. BethElision is where a sound disappears in between two words in connected speech. With plosives, this most often happens with words ending in /t/ and /d/ sounds. BethYes. In fluent speech, when a /t/ sound comes in between two consonant sounds, we often don't pronounce it, which makes the words flow together more fluently. Jiaying没错,比如:“next month” 就变成了 /neksmʌnθ/;“helped them” 就变成了/helpðəm/。 BethRemember, if you have a question about the English language you'd like to ask us, please send us an email.
